The open-source platform community is growing day after day, thanks to members\u2019 suggestions and contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Some numbers about the Kafka Community \u2013 courtesy of Confluent<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This marked an amazingly rapid growth, making Kafka one of the most popular open-source projects in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Definitely, Kafka and data streaming are already part of our daily lives; numerous industries are powered by the Apache Software Foundation\u2019s open-source platform and streaming data technologies, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Healthcare and medication suggestions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grocery delivery;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smart home devices;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renewable energy, power grid and smart device management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1: The Keynote; highlights the current revolution of Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 1 started with the impressive Keynote speech, introduced by Confluent Lead Technologist Ben Stopford. The Keynote kept on with&nbsp;<strong>Confluent CEO Jay Kreps<\/strong>\u2019 cracking talk \u201c<em>Modern Data Flow: Data pipelines done right<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Jay, Kafka acts as a kind of&nbsp;<strong>central nervous system<\/strong>&nbsp;that connects every application and operational layer \u2013 allowing companies to capture a real-time feed. This is useful to act on it intelligently \u2013 allowing to build smarter and more connected software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a consequence, this approach rises to every different kind of application across any industry one can imagine. Quoting Jay: \u201d<em>Broadly, we could kind of cut this list into two buckets: the streaming apps, which are acting on real-time data streams to take action, to react or respond; and the streaming pipelines, which are getting the data from place to place. And there\u2019s not a hard distinction between these two<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Let\u2019s continue by answering the question: \u201cWhat is happening in the world of data?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cHow do we get the right data to the right place and the right format at the right time, that whole grody area of piping data around at an organization. This is something that\u2019s been around for a while. There\u2019s a whole ecosystem of tools, both quite old and incredibly new that has been around to try and serve this.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;states Kreps.<em>&nbsp;\u201cI think Kafka is kind of disrupting this space from the bottom. It\u2019s kinda coming up into it, giving a different way of thinking about data<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Five principles for Modern Data Flow \u2013 courtesy of Confluent<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the reason why Kreps talked about&nbsp;<strong>five principles for modern data flow<\/strong>; \u201c<em>and by modern data flow, I mean where I think this area of pipelines and streaming ETL and data movement is going, it\u2019s all about the flow of data across an organization<\/em>\u201d says Jay. The five principles include different layers of data management and development, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol id=\"block-4acc140b-d0de-456a-901d-82c48da7e45d\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/staging5.radicalbit.io\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1610&amp;action=edit#data-streaming\">(Data) Streaming<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/staging5.radicalbit.io\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1610&amp;action=edit#decentralized\">Decentralized (Data)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/staging5.radicalbit.io\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1610&amp;action=edit#declarative\">Declarative<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/staging5.radicalbit.io\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1610&amp;action=edit#dev-oriented\">Developer-oriented<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/staging5.radicalbit.io\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=1610&amp;action=edit#governed-and-observable\">Governed &amp; Observable<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In particular, we\u2019ll focus on Streaming and Decentralization concepts, as we in Radicalbit are evolving over the same ideas with our MLOps platform.<a href=\"https:\/\/staging5.radicalbit.io\/prodotto\/helicon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1: (Data) Streaming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Jay, the majority of technologies&nbsp;<strong>are still built around batch data extraction, batch data processing and batch data delivery.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>I think that to be building new batch tools in 2022 is a little bit surprising\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>states Kreps<em>, \u201cI\u2019m reminded of the quote from&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>Henry Ford<\/em><\/strong><em>, who said. \u2018If I asked people what they want, they would have told me to build a faster horse\u2019.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;Following Kreps, there is a kind of an element that makes batch tools simpler and better:&nbsp;<strong>streaming technology<\/strong>.&nbsp;<em>\u201cIt\u2019s not like all the \u2018horses\u2019 are gone, but it\u2019s clear that cars at this point are the future. And I think that\u2019s analogous to data. It\u2019s not like all our data is streaming yet, but it\u2019s pretty clear the direction that things are heading in<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Through streaming technology, one has more and more need for businesses to be able to act intelligently in real-time<\/strong>. \u201c<em>When we think about data pipeline technologies, you\u2019re either gonna have a good streaming pipeline which can serve a broad variety of use cases, or you\u2019re gonna end up doing everything twice. You can have different ad hoc pipelines for each thing, which is quite a burden to get right, as we think about the large ecosystem of data that we\u2019re trying to serve.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is precisely what Radicalbit\u2019s <\/strong><strong>platform is working on<\/strong>. Through intelligent improvements,&nbsp;<strong>one doesn\u2019t need to store info in data lakes or do batch<\/strong>. But customers can move to the dynamic and flexible use of AI through autonomous processes designed to grant tangible results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"decentralized\">#2: Decentralized (Data)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the words of Kreps, \u201c<strong>decentralization<\/strong>\u201d means&nbsp;<strong>breaking sequential processes up<\/strong>. \u201c<em>For those who have heard about data meshes as kind of an organizing principle for data, that\u2019s this, it\u2019s about decentralization<\/em>\u201d states Confluent Co-Founder &amp; CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Data Mesh<\/strong>&nbsp;most relevant feature is&nbsp;<strong>a new organisational and architectural model that can recognise the importance of a distributed and domain-driven approach to data organisation<\/strong>&nbsp;along with a centralised one to data governance. This makes data actual \u201coutcomes\u201d that can be offered and managed by specific domains, meeting a company\u2019s business requirements, rather than individual application needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jay mentioned that&nbsp;<strong>data is flowing across departments and taking different shapes<\/strong>. For him, it\u2019s about time to give developers the freedom of choosing the best data platform to enable a fast and reliable connection between services. \u201c<em>Almost every system in a company needs to have access to data that is maintained elsewhere in the organization. And that data needs to be fresh, it needs to be up to date<\/em>,\u201d says Jay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking our MLOps platform&nbsp;as an example, one can imagine our platform as a central hub that&nbsp;<strong>takes every real-time impulse and flow of data<\/strong>&nbsp;and allows everything to plug into what is needed. Moreover,&nbsp;<strong>each team member doesn\u2019t have to know all the details of everybody\u2019s work<\/strong>; allowing companies to scale the use of data. Indeed<strong>, decentralized work is a reality with our MLOps platform<\/strong>; Data Scientists can work on one part of a project, communicating with another team (let\u2019s say, Data Engineers) that is working on completely something else.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cS<em>o that the teams who are publishing out the data, all they know is that they send data in that schema, the teams that subscribe don\u2019t need to know all the implementation details, they tap into it. To support real-time streaming, you\u2019re gonna have a bunch of things that run all the time. So there\u2019s no after it runs, it\u2019s running continuously, you can\u2019t sequence the running of things<\/em>.\u201d states Jay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"declarative\">#3: Declarative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Declarative concept spots the opinion that developers should aim to write code that tells what they want to achieve and not how. According to Jay, we are&nbsp;<strong>moving from heavy systems and centric infrastructures<\/strong>&nbsp;to something lighter and more declarative.&nbsp;\u201c<em>We\u2019re moving from tools that are kind of closed, gooey oriented ecosystems to something that is kind of an open, developer-friendly ecosystem, and something a little bit opaque to something that\u2019s&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>governed and observable<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;as it occurs<\/em>,\u201d concludes Kreps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dev-oriented\">#4: Developer-oriented<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth concept by Jay is Developer-oriented tools; this might be a slogan for Open Source Software that developers can embrace without licensing limits and integrate with their favourite tools. Moreover, through pre-packaged integrations, developers could spend less time on plumbing allowing them to focus on building. \u201c<em>Something that would\u2019ve been more of a whiteboard concept with a lot of low-level implementation details can now be expressed simply, you can version control it, you can review it, you can use your full toolchain to work with that thing. And I think that\u2019s a really important characteristic of developer-oriented tools. And this is something I think the modern ecosystem does pretty well.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"governed-and-observable\">#5: Governed &amp; Observable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this era of ever-growing data, it\u2019s easy to lose control over assets. Therefore, developers should have tools to keep an eye on their data landscape. This is where prebuilt integrations to internal and external services and an accessible console can make the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To wrap up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are now heading in the direction already predicted by Jay; society is inevitably becoming more and more real-time-oriented. Confluent CEO expresses this concept pretty well; \u201c<em>society and infrastructures are becoming more and more real-time<\/em>,\u201d and he\u2019s right \u2013 we\u2019re living in a world where everything is faster and more immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Radicalbit did believe this from the very beginning, with a pioneering and innovation-oriented vision and approach.
